ABUJA – The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Education Secretariat has intensified the monitoring of third-term promotion examinations in public schools across the six Area Councils to strengthen quality assurance, improve learning outcomes, and ensure the credibility of the examination process.
The monitoring exercise, coordinated by the Education Resource Centre (ERC), is aimed at ensuring that schools comply with established examination guidelines while promoting fairness, transparency, and excellence in teaching and learning.
Speaking during the exercise, the Director of the Education Resource Centre, Dr. Neemat Daud Abdulrahim, said promotion examinations are a critical component of the education system because they determine whether students progress to the next class.
She stressed that students should be evaluated based on what they have been taught, the effective implementation of the curriculum, and their actual academic performance.

According to her, the ERC, which is responsible for developing and coordinating promotion examination questions for public senior secondary schools in the FCT, has a statutory duty to monitor the conduct of examinations to ensure compliance with laid-down procedures, discourage examination malpractice, and protect the integrity of the assessment process.
Dr. Abdulrahim explained that regular monitoring also helps education authorities identify operational challenges, strengthen accountability, and improve the overall quality of education in public schools.
She urged school administrators to adopt innovative approaches that address challenges such as limited classroom space and proper seating arrangements during examinations.
The ERC Director commended the Principal of Government Science Technical College (GSTC), Mr. Musa Kuta, for introducing a seating arrangement that places SS1 and SS2 students in the same examination hall. She described the strategy as an effective measure for discouraging examination malpractice while encouraging discipline, independent learning, and orderly conduct during examinations.
She added that monitoring teams also engage principals, teachers, and students during school visits to gather firsthand information on operational challenges and develop practical recommendations for improving education delivery.
Dr. Abdulrahim noted that the FCT Administration, led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Wike, has continued to prioritise education through the renovation of public schools, improved infrastructure, and stronger quality assurance systems aimed at enhancing teaching and learning.
She reaffirmed the ERC’s commitment to sustained monitoring and evaluation of school examinations to ensure compliance with educational standards and provide learners across the FCT with quality, inclusive, and conducive education.
Also speaking, the Principal of Government Science Technical College, Mr. Musa Kuta, praised the Education Resource Centre for its professionalism and consistency in carrying out its statutory responsibilities.
He said public schools across the FCT remain committed to working closely with the Centre to uphold credible examination processes and improve educational standards throughout the Territory.
