Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated Mr. Péter Magyar on his inauguration as Prime Minister of Hungary following his swearing-in ceremony held at the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest on May 9, 2026.

Nigeria also congratulated the Tisza Party on its victory in Hungary’s parliamentary elections conducted on April 12, 2026.

In a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, extended Nigeria’s best wishes to the new Hungarian government as it begins its administration.

The Nigerian government described the political transition in Hungary as a significant milestone in the country’s democratic development, noting that it reflects the importance of democratic participation, constitutional governance, and peaceful political transition in strengthening national institutions and public trust.

Nigeria further reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining cordial diplomatic relations with Hungary, built on mutual respect, constructive engagement, and shared dedication to international cooperation.

Both countries have continued to strengthen bilateral relations in several sectors including education, agriculture, trade and investment, science and technology, energy cooperation, and capacity development.

Nigeria particularly acknowledged Hungary’s scholarship and educational exchange programmes, which have contributed to stronger people-to-people ties between both nations.

The Federal Government also welcomed Prime Minister Magyar’s commitment to strengthening Hungary’s role within Europe while promoting democratic governance, regional stability, and economic development.

Nigeria expressed confidence that relations between both countries would continue to grow through sustained diplomatic dialogue and mutually beneficial partnerships.

The statement added that Nigeria remains ready to work closely with the new Hungarian administration in advancing bilateral cooperation and promoting shared interests within multilateral organisations, including the United Nations and other global platforms.

Nigeria also wished Prime Minister Magyar and the Hungarian government success in office while expressing hope for continued peace, stability, and prosperity for the people of Hungary.
