The Federal Government has called for stronger collaboration between the media, public institutions, and key stakeholders to tackle the growing spread of disinformation and misinformation in Nigeria.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the call in Abuja during the 2026 World Press Freedom Day celebration held at Radio House.

He stressed that coordinated efforts are essential to protect public trust and ensure national stability, noting that the current administration is committed to partnering with media professionals and global organisations to promote responsible journalism.

According to the minister, press freedom remains a constitutional right, and the government is focused on creating a safe and enabling environment for journalists to operate freely and responsibly within the framework of democratic values and the rule of law.

Idris also condemned all forms of harassment and attacks against journalists, warning that such actions weaken democratic institutions and erode public confidence in governance.

He highlighted ongoing reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu aimed at improving transparency and access to information. These include sustained media engagement,

implementation of the Freedom of Information Act, and investments in public communication systems.

The minister further noted Nigeria’s partnership with UNESCO in establishing the International Media and Information Literacy Institute in Abuja as a key step toward improving media literacy and promoting critical thinking in the digital age.

He urged journalists to uphold professionalism, fairness, and ethical standards, emphasizing that press freedom must be exercised with responsibility.

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Binyerem Ukaire, described the event as a vital platform for strengthening institutional partnerships.

She pointed out that the rapid growth of digital platforms has increased the spread of misinformation, calling for more coordinated and strategic responses to address the challenge.

Ukaire reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to promoting dialogue, building partnerships, and enhancing professionalism within the media sector.

The event attracted participants from major institutions, including the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Nigerian Press Council, and other development partners.
