China has called on Eswatini and a number of other countries to reconsider their diplomatic stance on Taiwan, urging them to stop supporting what it described as “Taiwan independence” forces.
The call was made by a spokesperson of China’s Foreign Ministry following a visit by Taiwan’s leader, Lai Ching-te, to Eswatini aboard a private jet provided by the country’s monarch.
Beijing criticised the trip, describing it as politically motivated and accusing Taiwan’s leadership of undermining regional stability.
The spokesperson also reiterated China’s long-standing position that the “one-China principle” remains a widely accepted norm in international relations.
China maintains that Taiwan is an integral part of its territory and opposes any form of official engagement between Taiwan and countries that have formal diplomatic ties with Beijing.
The statement further warned that continued support for Taiwan’s independence movement would ultimately be unsuccessful, stressing that global consensus remains aligned with China’s position.
Eswatini is currently the only African country that maintains formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, a situation that has drawn increasing attention amid ongoing geopolitical tensions between Beijing and Taipei.
