📍Abuja | Media360Impact Report
China has officially handed over the newly constructed ECOWAS Headquarters building in Abuja, marking a significant milestone in China-Africa relations and regional development in West Africa.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Yu Dunhai, described the project as China’s flagship support initiative for the regional bloc and a symbol of enduring cooperation between China and Africa.

Popularly referred to as the “Eye of West Africa,” the modern complex began construction in December 2022 and was completed after over 1,200 days of work.

The structure blends advanced Chinese architectural expertise with elements of West African cultural identity, creating a landmark designed to enhance the operational efficiency of the ECOWAS Commission.

The facility is expected to strengthen regional integration, improve institutional capacity, and support coordinated development efforts among member states.

Ambassador Yu highlighted that the project reflects decades of partnership between China and Africa, noting that 2026 marks 70 years of diplomatic relations. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Africa’s development through mutual respect, non-interference, and practical cooperation.

He also referenced key initiatives, including the “Ten Partnership Actions” proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping and China’s recent zero-tariff policy for African exports, as part of efforts to deepen economic ties and modernization across the continent.

Yu further emphasized China’s support for ECOWAS in promoting peace, stability, and regional integration, while backing the principle of “African solutions to African problems.”

He commended Nigeria’s role as host of ECOWAS and a regional leader, noting that the project was made possible through strong collaboration with the Nigerian government.

He added that China looks forward to aligning its development plans with Nigeria’s “Renewed Hope” agenda to strengthen bilateral relations.

The new headquarters stands as a symbol of shared aspirations between China and West Africa, reflecting a broader commitment to partnership, development, and a collective future.
