TDF: Failed G100 Summit Shows Opposition Is No Threat to Tinubu’s 2027 Bid

The Democratic Front (TDF) has described the reported failure of the G100 opposition summit in Abuja as evidence of what it called the opposition’s lack of unity and political strength ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Danjuma Muhammad, and Secretary, Wale Adedayo, the group argued that the inability of opposition parties to reach consensus on a common presidential candidate showed that they were currently not in a position to pose a serious electoral challenge to President Bola Tinubu.

TDF particularly pointed to the absence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi from the summit, describing their non-attendance as a setback to efforts by opposition parties to build a unified platform against Tinubu.

The group alleged that the summit exposed divisions within the opposition camp and represented another setback in attempts to produce a single presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

“We view the conspicuous absence of the presidential candidate of African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, and his NDC counterpart, Peter Obi, from the recently held summit of opposition parties in Abuja, as a major setback in the opposition’s conspiracy to wrest power next year,” TDF said.

The organisation also criticised what it described as the political ambitions of Atiku and Obi, arguing that their emergence as presidential candidates of different political platforms had complicated earlier efforts to establish a unified opposition front.

TDF referenced the April 25, 2026, Ibadan Declaration, which it said was intended to encourage opposition parties to work towards a common platform ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

According to the group, the subsequent emergence of Atiku and Obi as candidates of different parties has made the prospect of a single opposition candidate more difficult.

TDF further accused opposition parties of experiencing internal divisions, leadership disputes, litigation and alleged disregard for party constitutions.

It argued that these challenges had weakened cohesion within the opposition and undermined its ability to develop what it described as a clear ideological and political alternative ahead of the 2027 election.

The group also questioned what it described as an apparent contradiction in the opposition’s political strategy.

TDF said opposition parties had previously accused the Tinubu administration of attempting to undermine Nigeria’s multi-party democracy, while simultaneously exploring the possibility of adopting a single presidential candidate across multiple political parties.

The organisation maintained that the inability of the opposition to agree on a common candidate demonstrated its current political challenges.

It consequently argued that the outcome of the G100 summit indicated that the opposition was divided and, in its assessment, presently incapable of posing a significant electoral threat to Tinubu’s bid for another term.

The claims and assessment were made by TDF in its statement and represent the group’s political position ahead of the 2027 general election.
