The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has emphasized the critical importance of physical, mental, and emotional fitness for military personnel to effectively combat terrorism, banditry, and other emerging security threats facing Nigeria.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the inaugural CDS Armed Forces Inter-Service Archery Competition 2025 on Sunday, General Musa, represented by the Chief of Defence Policy and Plans (CDPP), Air Vice Marshal Sayo Olatunde, said that staying fit is essential for upholding the values and responsibilities of military service.
General Musa noted that the Inter-Service Archery Competition serves not only as a platform to select the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s team for upcoming local and international archery championships but also as a vital non-kinetic approach to strengthening operational readiness.
He said, “The timing of this competition is particularly significant given the security challenges the nation is facing. It aims to enhance marksmanship and instill core values such as integrity, precision, innovation, intensity, and excellence. Fitness is critical to ensuring effective service delivery.”
Commending the competitors, the CDS highlighted the exceptional talent, discipline, and camaraderie demonstrated during the event. He described archery as more than a sport, calling it a discipline that demands concentration, perseverance, and resilience — qualities fundamental to military service.
“With each arrow released, our personnel not only aim for a target but also demonstrate the accuracy, resolve, and continual pursuit of excellence that define the spirit of our armed forces,” Musa added.
