The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has been honoured as one of Nigeria’s Top 100 Environmental and Sustainability Professionals by Environment Africa Magazine.

The award, which celebrates exceptional leadership and innovation in environmental stewardship, also conferred on him a Certificate of Recognition as Nigeria’s Top ECO-HERO 2025. Professor Anosike was represented at the event by Mrs. Glory Onyegbule, Director of Applied Meteorological Services at NiMet.

The recognition highlights Prof. Anosike’s remarkable contributions to climate resilience, sustainable development, and environmental innovation. Through his leadership, NiMet has transformed the delivery of weather and climate information ensuring it directly supports vulnerable communities, critical sectors, and long-term national planning.

Under his stewardship, the agency has significantly enhanced its early warning systems to provide timely, impact-based forecasts, helping mitigate the effects of floods, droughts, and other extreme weather events. These improvements have made climate data more accessible to farmers, local governments, and disaster managers, leveraging digital platforms and mobile technology for real-time updates.

Prof. Anosike has also championed the adoption of AI-powered forecasting tools and digital climate advisory services, particularly targeting smallholder farmers who are most at risk from climate shocks. By promoting the translation of forecasts into local languages and simplified formats, he has bridged long-standing gaps in climate communication, ensuring no community is left behind.

Beyond technology, Prof. Anosike is building a collaborative ecosystem of universities, development partners, and private sector players to expand weather infrastructure, scale climate education, and nurture a new generation of meteorologists and sustainability experts.

He has also been a strong advocate for mainstreaming climate risk in urban planning and corporate sustainability reporting, encouraging public and private institutions to adopt proactive measures for resilience and adaptation.

Prof. Anosike’s recognition underscores his science-driven leadership, visionary reforms, and commitment to a more climate-resilient Nigeria. His efforts continue to position NiMet as a key player in advancing sustainable development across Africa.
