The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged Nigerians to disregard a viral video currently circulating on social media showing a tricycle rider, unclad, confronting its operatives and damaging a patrol vehicle along the Benin–Sapele Road in Edo State.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, the Corps clarified that the incident was not recent but occurred on July 16, 2020 in Benin City and was fully addressed both legally and administratively years ago.
The tricycle rider involved, identified as Mr. Adeshine Adeyemo, was arraigned before the Evbuoriaria Magistrate Court, Benin City, under case number MEV/117C/2020. On January 11, 2021, he was found guilty of malicious damage and breach of public peace, and was subsequently sentenced to three months in prison.
In addition, the FRSC revealed that its own operatives captured in the video were not left unchecked. A disciplinary panel investigated their conduct, and the seven-man patrol team was sanctioned with a reduction in rank and redeployed for unprofessional behaviour during the encounter.
“The recirculation is a calculated act by mischievous handlers to attract traffic to their social media pages, misinform the public, and stir unnecessary emotions over a matter long resolved,” the statement read.
The Corps stressed that while it would not tolerate any attack on its personnel or installations, it equally would not spare any officer found guilty of professional misconduct. This dual stance, the FRSC said, remains unchanged.
Warning against panic over the recycled video, the FRSC appealed to citizens to cooperate with law enforcement officers and assured the public of its commitment to professionalism, discipline, and respect for human dignity in the discharge of its duties.
