Hon. Kayauta Yakubu, former National Woman Leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has formally defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Yakubu was received into the ruling party on Tuesday at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja by the APC National Woman Leader, Dr. Mary Alile-Idele. The APC Chairman for Kuje Area Council, Alhaji Adamu Danladi Ibrahim, alongside Yakubu’s supporters and political associates, witnessed the event.
Speaking on behalf of the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, Dr. Alile-Idele described Yakubu’s decision as a welcome development for the party. She said the APC remains open to Nigerians willing to contribute to national development and noted that the party’s expanding membership reflects public confidence in its leadership and policies.
Alile-Idele also referenced ongoing reforms and initiatives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, including infrastructure development, empowerment programmes, and the student loan scheme under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which she said has widened access to higher education.
She welcomed Yakubu and her supporters into the party, expressing confidence in her capacity to mobilise women and grassroots supporters ahead of future elections.
In her remarks, Yakubu said her decision to leave the ADC was based on her personal assessment of governance and development under the APC-led administration.
The Kuje-born politician from Rubochi Ward in the Federal Capital Territory said she joined the APC voluntarily to contribute to grassroots political development and national growth.
According to her, no one pressured her into the decision, adding that she had previously been part of the APC during its formative years before leaving the party. She described her return as a homecoming and expressed readiness to work for her constituents and the party.
Also speaking, Alhaji Adamu Danladi Ibrahim, APC Chairman for Kuje Area Council, described Yakubu as a founding member of the party with strong mobilisation capacity. He expressed optimism that her return would strengthen the party’s base ahead of forthcoming Area Council elections.
Yakubu’s defection adds to recent movements within Nigeria’s political landscape as parties position themselves ahead of future electoral contests.
