Four detainees who had spent more than four years in custody have been released following months of engagement between human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju and the Department of State Services (DSS).

Adeyanju disclosed the development, describing it as the outcome of sustained discussions with the security agency over cases involving prolonged detention.

In a statement, the lawyer expressed appreciation to the Director-General of the DSS for considering his requests and demonstrating a willingness to review cases involving individuals who have remained in custody for extended periods.

He also disclosed that the DSS Director-General had considered his request for appropriate compensation for the released detainees.

Adeyanju, however, said efforts were ongoing to secure the release or review the cases of other individuals facing similar circumstances.

He specifically identified detainees at Wawa Barracks in Minna, Niger State, as among those whose cases his team continues to monitor.

The lawyer said his firm would sustain its engagement with the relevant authorities to ensure that other cases of prolonged detention receive attention.

The development comes amid continuing concerns about prolonged detention and the need to ensure that the rights of individuals in custody are respected.

Adeyanju’s latest disclosure did not identify the four released detainees or provide details about the circumstances surrounding their detention.

He also did not disclose the nature or amount of compensation being considered.

His firm said it would continue monitoring similar cases, particularly those involving detainees at Wawa Barracks, as efforts continue to secure appropriate interventions.
