Abuja | Media Report
The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) have described the Nigeria Union of Journalists as a vital partner in strengthening national security, emphasising that responsible and ethical journalism plays a crucial role in promoting peace and unity.

This position was conveyed in an Easter message delivered on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, during an Easter programme organised by the NUJ themed “Resurrection Power: Grace, Faith, Hope and New Life.”

Representing the CDS, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, extended goodwill to journalists and commended the union for hosting a gathering that blended faith, patriotism, and professional responsibility.

He noted that Easter symbolises the triumph of life over death, truth over falsehood, and hope over despair values he said remain deeply relevant as Nigeria navigates ongoing security and socio-economic challenges.

Drawing parallels with the Christian narrative, he said Nigeria’s journey reflects resilience and the possibility of renewal through unity and faith.
According to him, the Armed Forces continue to draw inspiration from these values as troops remain actively engaged across multiple theatres of operation combating terrorism and insurgency, addressing banditry, securing maritime domains, and supporting civil authorities during emergencies.

He highlighted that the sacrifices of military personnel have enabled many affected communities to begin rebuilding, with schools reopening, farmers returning to their lands, and displaced families resettling.

The AFN also underscored the growing importance of the media in national security, noting that modern conflicts extend beyond physical battlefields into the information space.

The CDS stressed that accurate, balanced, and verified reporting helps counter misinformation, strengthens public trust, and fosters national cohesion.

He described journalists as indispensable allies in peacebuilding, noting that responsible media coverage can discourage fear-driven narratives and promote unity.

The Armed Forces reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining transparency and professionalism in their engagement with the media.

The message also called on Nigerians to embrace reconciliation, compassion, and collective responsibility, emphasising that national security is a shared duty involving citizens, community leaders, religious institutions, and the media.

The CDS paid tribute to fallen heroes who lost their lives in the line of duty, assuring that their sacrifices would never be forgotten. He urged citizens to continue supporting and praying for troops deployed across the country.

Looking ahead, he reiterated the military’s commitment to enhancing operational effectiveness, strengthening inter-agency collaboration, and adopting modern strategies to tackle emerging threats.

He concluded with a call for renewed faith in God, confidence in Nigeria’s future, and collective commitment to building a peaceful, secure, and prosperous nation.
