Lawyer and political commentator Deji Adeyanju has condemned the reported attack on Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and his supporters in Benue State.

In a statement, Adeyanju described the alleged incident as unacceptable in a democracy, arguing that political differences should not be used to justify attacks or restrictions on citizens’ freedom of movement.

He stressed that freedom of movement is a constitutionally guaranteed right of Nigerian citizens and said it was particularly disturbing that the reported incident involved a presidential candidate.

According to Adeyanju, political competition should be based on competing ideas, policies and development plans rather than intimidation, violence or electoral manipulation.

He called on President Bola Tinubu to unequivocally condemn the reported incident.

Adeyanju also urged the Benue State Governor to ensure that the state government does not tolerate or encourage what he described as political brigandage.

He further appealed to political supporters and individuals seeking to gain favour with those in power to desist from actions that could undermine democratic values.

“Politics is about competing ideas, policies and blueprints, not thuggery, intimidation or rigging,” Adeyanju said.

His comments followed reports of an alleged attack involving Obi and his supporters in Benue State.

The circumstances surrounding the reported incident, including the identities of those responsible and the full extent of what occurred, were not independently established in the statement.

Media360Impact will continue to monitor developments and provide verified updates.
