📍Abuja | Media Report
The Federal Government has condemned the growing trend of Igbo coronations in the diaspora, describing the development as a “big embarrassment” to Nigeria’s image abroad.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that it is engaging diplomatic channels to clarify that such coronations are purely ceremonial and do not represent officially recognized traditional institutions.

According to the Ministry, Nigeria’s foreign missions have begun distancing themselves from the events to avoid diplomatic misunderstandings. The Nigerian High Commission has already cautioned Nigerians to maintain a low profile and respect the laws and cultural sensitivities of host countries.

Government officials emphasized that while cultural expression is encouraged, it must not conflict with the sovereignty or established structures of host nations.

The Minister also urged Ohanaeze Ndigbo to uphold disciplinary measures against individuals involved in controversial coronations, stressing the need for responsible representation of Nigerian traditions abroad.

The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to preserving Nigeria’s diplomatic integrity while supporting lawful cultural promotion across the diaspora.
