Tension in Amasiri: Allegations Trail 72-Hour Ultimatum and Military Deployment in Ebonyi

Fresh tension is brewing in Amasiri community, Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, following claims by residents that a 72-hour ultimatum issued amid a lingering communal crisis was followed by the deployment of soldiers into the area.

Community voices circulating online allege that the presence of the military has resulted in casualties, injuries, arrests, and displacement of residents. Viral videos shared on social media appear to show security operations in parts of the community, though the full context and casualty figures remain independently unverified.
The development has sparked debate about the role of state and federal authorities in internal security operations. Under Nigeria’s constitutional framework, governors are regarded as Chief Security Officers of their states, but the operational control and deployment of the armed forces fall under the authority of the President as Commander-in-Chief.

Some residents and observers argue that the scale of the operation raises legal and humanitarian questions, especially if civilians were affected. They are calling for transparency on the rules of engagement, the objective of the operation, and the current status of those reportedly detained.

Supporters of the government’s action, however, insist that decisive steps were necessary to restore order and prevent further breakdown of law and order in the area following escalating violence linked to the communal dispute.

As tension lingers, stakeholders are urging calm and calling for an independent review of the situation to establish facts, protect civilian lives, and ensure that any security intervention remains within the bounds of the law.

At the time of filing this report, there has been no detailed official statement from the office of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru addressing the specific allegations circulating from Amasiri.
