Malami Must Face EFCC Probe Despite ‘Crocodile Tears’ — Adeyanju

Human rights activist and convener of the Concerned Nigerians group, Deji Adeyanju, has dismissed claims by former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is targeting him for political reasons.

In a statement on Monday, Adeyanju described Malami’s allegations of political vendetta against the anti-graft agency as unfortunate and diversionary, insisting that the EFCC has both the mandate and competence to investigate the former minister.

He urged the commission to proceed without hesitation in probing Malami’s tenure in office, particularly on issues surrounding the handling and management of the recovered Abacha loot.

Adeyanju stressed that public office is a sacred trust, adding that all past and present public officials must be willing to render a full account of their stewardship when called upon to do so.

According to him, Malami exercised enormous state power while in government and showed little restraint in approving and pursuing prosecutions against others, including members of the opposition.

“He cannot now seek to exempt himself from the same process he once deployed against others,” Adeyanju said, noting that accountability must be applied without fear or favour.

The activist maintained that submitting to investigation is not persecution but a necessary step in strengthening public confidence in the fight against corruption.
