Abuja, August 13, 2025 – The fight against drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria has received a major boost as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu handed over 48 operational vehicles to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The new fleet comprising 38 SUVs for zonal, state, and strategic commands, and 10 sedans for directorates was commissioned at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
Representing the President at the event, National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu said the gesture underscored Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places drug control at the heart of Nigeria’s national security strategy.
“Mobility is critical to stopping traffickers and reaching danger points quickly. Drug trafficking funds insurgents, criminal gangs, and fuels insecurity. These vehicles will strengthen NDLEA’s reach and deterrence,” Ribadu said.
He praised NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) for transforming the agency into a result-driven force against illicit drugs, pledging continuous federal support.
Marwa, in his remarks, described the donation as “a milestone in repositioning NDLEA into a globally respected drug enforcement agency”, revealing that in the last two years under President Tinubu:
40,887 drug offenders including 45 barons have been arrested.
5.5 million kg of drugs seized.
704 hectares of cannabis farms destroyed.
8,682 convictions secured.
24,173 drug users treated and rehabilitated.
The Attorney General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, commended Tinubu’s support for the agency, noting the direct link between drug trafficking and other crimes.
Also speaking, Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, and Bureau of Public Procurement DG, Dr. Adebowale Adedokun, hailed NDLEA’s professionalism and due process in procurement.
The event also featured the decoration of 15 newly promoted Commanders of Narcotics with the rank of Assistant Commander General of Narcotics.
