Tompolo Has Earned Respect: Why Ododo’s Gratitude Should Not Be Mistaken for Weakness

The debate over Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s description of High Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, as his “leader, mentor and benefactor” has raised questions about leadership, humility, gratitude and political relationships.

In an article published by Arewa Agenda, Ozumi Abdul questioned whether the governor’s remarks suggested excessive humility or low self-esteem.

The discussion followed an event in Lokoja on October 12, 2026, where Ododo reportedly acknowledged Tompolo’s support for his political journey while receiving 25 campaign vehicles donated by Tompolo’s organisation, the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement, for mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While public officials must remain accountable to the people, interpreting the governor’s words as evidence of weakness may overlook the broader context of mentorship, personal relationships and Tompolo’s evolving public role.

Respect is not weakness. Gratitude is not inferiority. And acknowledging a mentor does not automatically diminish leadership.

LEADERSHIP EXTENDS BEYOND POLITICAL OFFICE

Holding a constitutional office does not automatically make its occupant superior to everyone outside government.

A governor exercises executive authority within the limits of the law. However, influence and leadership can also come from community development, philanthropy, professional experience and contributions to society.

Traditional rulers, entrepreneurs, community leaders and philanthropists may command respect because of their experience, achievements or service to others.

A governor can therefore acknowledge someone as a mentor in politics, personal development or community engagement without necessarily surrendering the authority of his office.

The central question is whether the governor continues to discharge his constitutional responsibilities, make independent decisions and remain accountable to the people.

Ododo’s description of Tompolo as a leader and mentor does not, on its own, establish that he has compromised his authority or diminished the dignity of his office.

If concerns arise about their relationship, those concerns should be examined through evidence, transparency and the conduct of both individuals rather than assumptions about the governor’s self-esteem.

TOMPOLO’S INFLUENCE DESERVES A BROADER ASSESSMENT

Tompolo remains a prominent figure associated with the Niger Delta and its long-running struggle over resource control, environmental degradation and the distribution of oil wealth.

His past involvement in armed agitation is an important part of his public record. That history must be acknowledged alongside the circumstances that shaped unrest in the oil-producing region, including environmental damage, perceived marginalisation and demands for greater economic opportunities.

Understanding the Niger Delta requires more than focusing on individual controversies. It also requires examining the historical grievances, security challenges and development concerns that have affected communities across the region.

Following the 2009 Presidential Amnesty Programme, Tompolo became increasingly associated with business and maritime security.

His company, Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, subsequently secured a role in pipeline surveillance operations aimed at combating crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism.

The protection of oil infrastructure remains important to Nigeria because petroleum revenue continues to influence government finances and broader economic stability.

Oil theft and pipeline vandalism have posed significant challenges to the country’s petroleum industry, making security operations in the Niger Delta a matter of national interest.

Tantita’s activities have consequently become part of wider discussions about efforts to protect oil infrastructure and address crude oil theft.

However, the company’s contribution should be assessed alongside the work of government security agencies and other stakeholders. Its performance, effectiveness and impact should be evaluated through credible evidence rather than political sentiment.

HUMANITARIAN INTERVENTIONS AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Tompolo’s public profile also includes reported philanthropic interventions and community development initiatives.

A report published by Trust Radio on October 3, 2026, documented several interventions associated with Tompolo and his foundation.

These included the renovation of Okerenkoko Cottage Hospital in 2012, the distribution of relief materials to flood victims in 2012, the provision of educational materials to schools in 2014 and a donation of desks to the Nigerian Maritime University in 2023.

The report also highlighted a pledge of ₦10 billion to the Delta State Security Trust Fund by Tompolo through Tantita in October 2025.

Similarly, a THISDAY report published on August 19, 2026, examined welfare investments, livelihood initiatives, agricultural investments and infrastructure projects associated with Tantita.

Such interventions deserve objective consideration because access to healthcare, education, emergency relief, employment and basic infrastructure directly affects people’s lives.

Where properly documented and effectively implemented, philanthropic programmes can complement public efforts to address community needs.

Nevertheless, philanthropy does not exempt any individual or organisation from scrutiny. Claims about donations, projects and their outcomes should be independently verified, while the long-term benefits to intended communities should be assessed.

A balanced assessment of Tompolo should recognise both the legitimate questions surrounding his past and any verifiable contributions to community welfare and national development.

WHY SHOULD ODODO BE CONDEMNED FOR EXPRESSING GRATITUDE?

Ododo’s reported remarks included an acknowledgment of Tompolo’s support during his political journey. That detail provides important context for understanding the governor’s expression of gratitude.

When someone acknowledges another person’s assistance, guidance or support, the statement may simply reflect appreciation for a relationship that has influenced their personal or professional development.

Gratitude should not automatically be interpreted as dependence, just as humility should not automatically be confused with weakness.

The governor’s description of Tompolo as a mentor and benefactor can therefore be understood as an acknowledgment of personal influence and political support.

However, Nigerians are entitled to ask questions about political relationships, campaign donations, the sources of political support and transparency, particularly when influential private individuals interact with elected officials.

These are legitimate public-interest concerns that deserve clear answers where necessary.

The important distinction is between asking reasonable questions about accountability and assuming that a public official has low self-esteem simply because he acknowledges another person’s influence.

If evidence emerges that a relationship has compromised official responsibilities or created conflicts of interest, the matter should be investigated on its merits.

The use of the word “mentor”, without additional evidence, does not establish that such a compromise has occurred.

Public officials should ultimately be judged by their decisions, conduct, transparency and performance rather than assumptions about what acknowledging a benefactor says about their character.

HUMILITY DOES NOT DIMINISH AUTHORITY

The controversy surrounding Ododo’s remarks raises a broader question about society’s expectations of political leaders.

Must a governor always speak as though nobody outside government has anything to teach him? Must elected officials avoid acknowledging their mentors or benefactors for fear of appearing subordinate?

Such expectations risk confusing political authority with personal superiority.

A confident leader should be able to acknowledge assistance, learn from others and express gratitude while remaining conscious of the responsibilities entrusted to him.

At the same time, humility must never become an excuse for abandoning those responsibilities.

A mentor may offer guidance, a benefactor may provide support, and a respected individual may exercise considerable influence. Nevertheless, an elected governor remains accountable for decisions made in the discharge of his constitutional duties.

These principles are not mutually exclusive.

The real test of leadership is not whether a governor acknowledges another person but whether he governs responsibly, makes decisions in the public interest and remains answerable to the people.

THE FINAL WORD: ACCOUNTABILITY MATTERS MORE THAN APPEARANCES

Nigeria needs a public culture that distinguishes legitimate scrutiny from the tendency to reduce complex issues to provocative headlines.

Tompolo’s past involvement in Niger Delta agitation remains part of his public record. His reported humanitarian interventions, business activities and the role of Tantita in pipeline surveillance also form part of the broader discussion about his public influence.

Each aspect deserves examination through evidence, fairness and context.

Similarly, Ododo’s acknowledgment of Tompolo should not automatically be interpreted as a surrender of authority or evidence of diminished self-esteem.

The more important questions concern transparency, accountability, the nature of their political relationship and whether the governor continues to fulfil his obligations to the people of Kogi State.

Leadership is not diminished by the willingness to learn, and gratitude is not proof of weakness.

If Ododo considers Tompolo a mentor because of personal influence, political support or lessons drawn from experience, that relationship can be examined without presuming that the governor has compromised his office.

Tompolo, like every other public figure, should be assessed through verifiable evidence rather than exclusively through the controversies of his past or the opinions of his critics.

Ultimately, the issue is not whether a governor can have a mentor. It is whether he continues to govern responsibly, transparently and in the public interest.

That is the standard that matters.
