The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has received an award from the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) in recognition of the Nigerian Air Force’s contributions to counterterrorism and other security operations across the country.
The award was presented at DECAN’s 2026 Conference and Awards in Abuja, where military leaders, defence officials and journalists discussed approaches to tackling Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
The conference, themed “Beyond Kinetic Warfare: Harnessing Technology and Intelligence-Led Operations for Nigeria’s National Security,” focused on the growing importance of intelligence, technology and collaboration among security agencies.
The recognition highlights the role of airpower in supporting military operations through aerial surveillance, intelligence gathering and coordinated air strikes against terrorist targets. Air Force support also helps ground troops improve their operational capabilities in the fight against terrorism and other security threats.
Participants at the conference called for greater investment in advanced surveillance systems, artificial intelligence and geospatial intelligence. They also stressed the need for real-time information sharing to improve threat detection and operational decisions.
However, speakers noted that technology alone would not resolve Nigeria’s security challenges without adequate personnel training, reliable equipment and effective coordination among security agencies.

The conference also examined the media’s responsibility in reporting military operations. The Minister of Defence urged journalists to uphold professionalism and accountability while protecting sensitive information that could jeopardise military missions or put personnel at risk.
He cautioned against publishing unverified reports and operational details that could compromise security efforts.
Aneke’s award comes as the Nigerian Air Force and other security agencies continue efforts to strengthen intelligence-led operations, modernise military capabilities and respond to terrorism and other security threats.
