The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has described the Federal Government’s proposed ₦1.5 trillion Lambata–Bida–Mokwa–Makera–Kontagora highway project as a major boost to Niger State’s economy, particularly agriculture, trade and transportation.
Idris made the remarks on Friday in Abuja when he led members of the Niger State Development Forum (NSDF) on a courtesy visit to Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago.
The minister commended the governor’s investments in agriculture, infrastructure, urban renewal and economic development, while highlighting the importance of cooperation between the Federal and State Governments in delivering critical infrastructure.
He described Niger State as strategically important to Nigeria because of its agricultural potential, geographical location and contribution to national electricity generation through the Kainji, Jebba and Shiroro hydroelectric installations.
Idris also praised Bago’s emphasis on mechanised farming, commercial agriculture and agro-industrial development, saying the initiatives could help strengthen the state’s economy.
₦1.5tn Highway Project Targets Agricultural and Commercial Growth
The minister singled out the planned reconstruction and dualisation of the Lambata–Bida–Mokwa–Makera–Kontagora Federal Highway as a significant federal infrastructure intervention.
According to him, the project is expected to improve access to farming communities, connect markets and industrial centres, and ease the movement of agricultural produce, goods and passengers.
“This is a landmark intervention in one of Nigeria’s most strategic agricultural and commercial corridors,” Idris said.
The groundbreaking ceremony was scheduled for October 13, 2026, in Bida, according to the minister’s statement.

The project is expected to strengthen transportation links across the corridor and support economic activities by improving connections between agricultural production areas and commercial destinations.
Bago Thanks Tinubu for Federal Support
Governor Bago expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting Niger State through federal infrastructure projects, development financing and appointments to federal institutions.
He said the highway project would ease the movement of people and goods, support agricultural growth and create better conditions for businesses to operate.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Niger State, I want to thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his love and support for our state,” Bago said.
The governor added that improved road infrastructure would contribute to agricultural prosperity and economic activity across the state.
Minister Expresses Sympathy Over Tragedies
During the visit, Idris also expressed condolences to the Niger State Government and residents, particularly families and communities affected by recent tragedies and security challenges.
He acknowledged the efforts of the state and federal governments, alongside security agencies, to protect lives and property.
The meeting highlighted the importance of cooperation between both levels of government in advancing infrastructure development, strengthening economic opportunities and addressing security concerns in Niger State.
