The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated the Government and people of Botswana as the southern African country marks its 60th Independence Anniversary.
Botswana celebrates its independence on September 30, 2026, marking six decades since it gained independence from British rule in 1966. The Botswana government lists September 30 as Botswana Day, while official celebrations for the 60th anniversary have been planned around the country.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, conveyed warm felicitations to the Government and people of Botswana on the milestone.
Nigeria acknowledged Botswana’s development journey since independence and commended its people for their resilience and commitment to national development.
The Federal Government also highlighted the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and Botswana, describing the ties between both countries as cordial and mutually beneficial.

According to the Ministry, bilateral relations have developed across political, economic and socio-cultural areas, supported by institutional engagements and people-to-people exchanges, including through the Nigeria-Botswana Joint Permanent Commission for Cooperation.
Nigeria and Botswana also cooperate through multilateral platforms, including the United Nations, African Union and Commonwealth of Nations.
The Federal Government said both countries continue to engage on issues including international peace and security, sustainable development and multilateral cooperation.
Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its friendship and cooperation with Botswana, particularly in areas of mutual interest and for the benefit of citizens of both countries.
The Federal Government also extended its best wishes to Botswana’s President, Advocate Duma Gideon Boko, as well as the Government and people of Botswana.
It wished the country continued peace, stability, prosperity and progress as it marks six decades of independence.
