The Federal Ministry of Education has released the final list of Ranked and Approved Textbooks for the 2026–2028 academic period, covering selected classes across primary and secondary schools in Nigeria.
The first phase of the national textbook ranking exercise covers Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS 1) and Senior Secondary School 1 (SS 1).
Under the new system, every approved textbook has been assigned a unique Ranking/QR Tracking Code, alongside details such as the book title, author, publisher and year of publication.
The Ministry said the QR-based identification system is designed to strengthen the monitoring of approved instructional materials and improve transparency in their selection, procurement and use.
The exercise was conducted under the guidance of the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, with the final list approved by the Minister of Education.
According to the Ministry, the additional process of generating and assigning unique tracking codes to each ranked textbook contributed to the time required to complete and validate the final lists.
Second phase to cover more classes
The textbook ranking exercise is being implemented in phases.
Following the completion of the first phase, the Ministry said preparations will begin for the second phase, which will cover Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS 2 and SS 2.
The same ranking, identification and QR tracking measures will also apply to textbooks covered under the next phase.
The Ministry has urged publishers, schools, education authorities, procurement agencies and other stakeholders to consult the official approved list before selecting or purchasing textbooks for the affected classes.
It said the exercise is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve access to quality, relevant and curriculum-aligned learning materials while strengthening transparency and accountability in textbook provision.
The complete 2026–2028 Ranked and Approved Textbooks list, including the Ranking/QR Tracking Code assigned to each approved title, is available through the Federal Ministry of Education’s official document.
