The Nigerian Army has deployed 178 personnel from the 236 Tank Battalion to Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State as part of efforts to strengthen security operations in the area.
The first batch of troops arrived at the Headquarters of Sector 8, Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), at about 4:40 p.m. on September 25, 2026.
The deployment is part of the Army’s ongoing efforts to restructure and strengthen its operational capacity and improve responses to emerging security threats across the country.
The 178 personnel were deployed in two groups of 89 troops each and were led by the Commanding Officer of the 236 Tank Battalion, Lt. Col. H.O. Obire.
Upon arrival, the troops were received by the Commander of Sector 8, OPEP, before commencing their operational activities within the sector.
According to security sources cited by Zagazola Makama, the newly deployed personnel began familiarisation with the sector’s Area of Responsibility and operational mandate.
The deployment comes amid renewed security concerns in Mangu and neighbouring communities, where attacks, killings, destruction of livestock and reprisal incidents have reportedly been recorded in recent weeks.
The additional personnel are expected to increase the military presence in vulnerable communities and support ongoing efforts to prevent further attacks.
The troops will also work alongside other security and response agencies operating in the area to protect civilians, deter threats and maintain security within communities under the sector’s jurisdiction.
The deployment is expected to strengthen the sector’s capacity to respond to emerging security challenges and support efforts to restore stability in affected communities.
