ABUJA — The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has successfully completed maintenance on the Zaria–Funtua 132kV transmission line without interrupting electricity supply, demonstrating its growing use of live-line technology to improve the reliability of Nigeria’s power transmission network.

The maintenance, carried out by TCN’s Kaduna Region Live-Line Crew between July 4 and July 7, 2026, involved replacing damaged glass disc insulators on several transmission towers while the line remained fully energized.

According to TCN, the operation eliminated the need for a planned power outage, allowing bulk electricity transmission to continue uninterrupted throughout the maintenance exercise.

The affected transmission towers—T14, T17, T40, T63, T78, T175, T177 and T178—each had at least five damaged glass disc insulators that were replaced with a combination of new polymer and glass disc insulators to improve the strength and reliability of the transmission infrastructure.

By carrying out the repairs under live-line conditions, TCN said it was able to maintain the stability of electricity supply while improving the performance and safety of the transmission line.

The company noted that the successful operation reflects its commitment to modern maintenance techniques aimed at reducing service disruptions, improving grid reliability and ensuring efficient power transmission across the country.

The latest exercise is part of TCN’s broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s national transmission network through proactive maintenance and the deployment of advanced technologies that allow critical repairs to be completed without disconnecting power.
