ABUJA — The Director General and CEO of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Comrade Philip Shaibu, has applauded the Super Falcons of Nigeria following their hard-fought 2-1 victory over South Africa in the semi-final of the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), describing it as a thrilling performance and a step closer to reclaiming continental glory.
Speaking shortly after the match, the former Deputy Governor of Edo State and ex-Bendel Insurance footballer described the encounter as a “final before the final”, praising the composure and resilience of the Nigerian ladies.
“Rasheedat Ajibade and Michelle Alozie were simply outstanding. They rose to the occasion when it mattered most. That was a statement win, and I commend the entire team,” Shaibu said.
Ajibade opened the scoring for Nigeria late in the first half, converting a penalty after South Africa’s Bambanani Mbane was penalized for handball. The Banyana Banyana equalized in the 60th minute through Linda Motlhalo’s penalty, following a foul on Hildah Magaia by Osinachi Ohale.
With the game appearing headed for extra time, Michelle Alozie stunned the crowd with a sensational long-range strike deep into stoppage time, sealing Nigeria’s place in the final and igniting dreams of a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
Shaibu, who revealed his intention to be present in Morocco for the final, urged the team and coaching crew to remain focused ahead of the clash against the tournament hosts.
“We must improve our game going into the final. Morocco are strong and will have the home advantage, so we must press harder and stay mentally sharp. Nigerians are waiting for the cup,” he added.
The NIS boss noted that while Nigeria was fortunate to secure the win, the Super Falcons must raise their performance level to overcome the hosts and bring the trophy home.
