BELEM, BRAZIL — November 2025 — The Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Simon Stiell, has called on all participating nations including Nigeria to reach clear, actionable agreements at the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), currently taking place in Belem, Brazil.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Stiell emphasized that countries must demonstrate full readiness for global climate cooperation and commit to accelerating the implementation of the Paris Agreement across all sectors.

“COP30 must connect climate action to people’s real lives to deliver stronger growth, more jobs, cleaner air, better health, and more affordable and secure energy,” he stated.

The UN climate chief underscored that while the Paris Agreement has delivered measurable progress, greater urgency is needed — particularly in regions like the Amazon — where the impacts of climate change are already being felt through destructive weather events.

He cited recent examples including Hurricane Melissa in the Caribbean, super typhoons in Vietnam and the Philippines, and a tornado that tore through southern Brazil as warning signs of worsening global climate instability.

“The time for hesitation is over. Devastating climate damages are already here so let’s get on with the job,” Stiell urged.

COP30, which runs from November 10 to 21, marks Stiell’s fourth conference since assuming office. The event brings together global leaders, negotiators, and experts to review progress on climate commitments and chart the next phase of global action.

Hosted in Brazil’s Amazon region, this year’s conference places special focus on forest conservation, biodiversity protection, and strengthening the link between climate action and sustainable development.
