Egyptian Star Calls for Respect as Defender Announces Summer Exit
By Alex Fredrick
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has voiced his disappointment over the jeers directed at Trent Alexander-Arnold by some Liverpool fans during the club’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal. The right-back, who recently announced his departure from the newly crowned Premier League champions, was met with boos when he stepped onto the pitch as a substitute.
Alexander-Arnold, 26, is set to leave his boyhood club when his contract expires at the end of June, with reports linking him to a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid. Born and raised in Liverpool, the defender came through the club’s youth academy before making his senior debut in 2016, going on to become a pivotal figure in the team’s domestic and international successes.
Salah, speaking to Sky Sports, expressed disappointment over the reception Alexander-Arnold received, describing it as “harsh” and undeserved.
“I think somehow the fans were being harsh with him,” Salah stated. “He didn’t deserve it at the time; he deserved the fans to treat him the best way possible because he gave it all to the club and the supporters.”
The Egyptian international emphasised the importance of acknowledging Alexander-Arnold’s loyalty and contributions to the club over nearly two decades.
“We shouldn’t act this way with anyone who always appreciates the fans, even if they were here for just six months. Imagine someone who’s given you his all for 20 years. It shouldn’t be like this,” Salah added.
He called on fans to show greater respect and appreciation in the team’s upcoming fixtures against Brighton and during the final game of the season, hoping for a proper farewell for the Liverpool-born defender.
Salah concluded, “I hope that will change in the next game, because he deserves the best send-off.”
Alexander-Arnold’s pending exit marks the end of an era for the Reds, with fans and players alike reflecting on his contributions and the legacy he leaves behind.
