As a follow-up to the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Ignitia, a delegation from Ignitia led by Mr. Yen Choi visited NiMet headquarters to initiate discussions on the implementation process.
Welcoming the team, the Director-General/CEO of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, reiterated NiMet’s statutory mandate as Nigeria’s sole legal provider and regulator of weather and climate information. He assured the visitors that NiMet is committed to granting access and licensing to credible private-sector partners such as Ignitia to enhance national capacity.
The partnership will focus on training in artificial intelligence (AI) for weather prediction and developing advisories to strengthen decision-making. The initiative is expected to improve the accuracy of weather forecasts for farmers across Nigeria, thereby boosting agricultural productivity and advancing climate resilience.
Both parties agreed to set up a joint technical committee within the next month to design a detailed roadmap for integrating AI-based weather tools into NiMet’s advisory services. The roadmap will outline phased implementation, measurable benchmarks, and methods for tracking impact in the months ahead.
