Ahead of the 2025 Easter celebrations, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a nationwide special patrol to enhance road safety, ensure smooth traffic flow, and respond swiftly to emergencies on major highways.
The special operation, which will run from April 16 to 23, has been initiated under the directive of Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed. All FRSC commanding officers have been instructed to mobilize personnel and resources to ensure high visibility on roads, timely removal of obstructions, and effective enforcement of traffic regulations.
Focus Areas of the Special Patrol
The objectives of the Easter patrol include:
- Reducing road traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities
- Improving emergency response to accident victims
- Conducting public awareness campaigns on safe driving
- Clearing broken-down vehicles and other obstructions quickly
To enforce traffic rules, over 200 mobile courts will be in operation across the country to handle infractions such as:
- Speeding and reckless driving
- Use of mobile phones while driving
- Overloading and failure to use seatbelts
- Operation of unsafe or poorly maintained vehicles
- Lane violations and illegal parking
Deployment of Resources
As part of the operation, the FRSC has mobilized significant logistics, including:
- 743 patrol vehicles
- 184 administrative vehicles
- 92 ambulances
- 23 tow trucks
- 144 motorbikes
- Digital breathalyzers and rescue equipment
In addition, 23 Help Areas and 15 traffic control camps will operate around the clock to manage gridlocks and provide emergency support. A National Situation Room has also been activated at FRSC headquarters to monitor patrol activities and coordinate responses nationwide.
Inter-Agency Collaboration
Corps Marshal Mohammed stressed the importance of working in partnership with other security and emergency response agencies. He directed FRSC teams to collaborate with the military, police, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Immigration Service, Federal Fire Service, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and state-level traffic agencies to ensure effective coverage.
Appeal to Road Users
While assuring the public of the Corps’ readiness, the Corps Marshal called on all motorists to drive responsibly and cooperate with road safety personnel during the holiday period. He extended Easter greetings to Nigerians and expressed hope for a peaceful and accident-free celebration.
“With the level of preparation and the support of the public, we are confident that this year’s Easter patrol will achieve its objectives,” Mohammed said.
The FRSC reiterated its commitment to reducing road traffic incidents and ensuring safer journeys during the festive season.
