The 2025 Press Week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, officially commenced on Friday with a congregational prayer held at the NASFAT Mosque in Utako, Abuja.
Delivering the sermon, the Acting Zonal Missionary Imam of NASFAT, FCT, Imam Marouf Farouji, called on the leadership of the NUJ to remain steadfast in their commitment to truth, justice, and service to humanity. He underscored the critical role of accurate journalism in promoting transparency, combating corruption, and fostering moral values in governance and society.
“Journalists are the conscience of the nation,” Imam Farouji said, adding that their work across traditional and digital platforms continues to shape public opinion and strengthen democracy.
Speaking on behalf of the NUJ FCT Council, Vice Chairman Comrade Yahaya Ndambabo emphasized that the prayer session reflects the nation’s deep-rooted religious diversity and values. He noted that a Christian service is scheduled for Sunday, demonstrating the union’s commitment to unity and inclusivity.
Ndambabo also reiterated the union’s ongoing advocacy for improved welfare for journalists in the FCT, including the provision of affordable housing and enhanced safety for media professionals.
The interfaith prayers mark the beginning of a week-long series of events aimed at celebrating journalism, reflecting on its challenges, and promoting professional excellence within the media landscape.
