The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has called for stronger climate-smart public-private partnerships (PPP) to boost resilience in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
He made this call on Monday in Abuja while delivering opening remarks at the Best Practice Workshop on Public-Private Partnership for Climate Information Services and Validation of the Climate-Smart Agribusiness Partnership for Resilience (CSAPR) Programme, convened by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.
Prof. Anosike stressed that integrating climate data into agro-infrastructure development was key to mitigating risks and ensuring long-term stability.
“Climate-smart PPPs are critical in this era of climate change. Embedding climate data, adaptation, and mitigation measures into project design will safeguard investments and enhance resilience,” he said.
The NiMet boss expressed appreciation to IFAD Country Director, Mrs. Dede Ekoue, for sustaining partnerships through initiatives such as LIFE-ND, VCDP, and SAPZ. He also highlighted NiMet’s recent innovations, including the launch of the Enhancing National Climate Services (ENACTS) Maproom, a digital platform that provides real-time forecasts, historical climate data, and tailored advisories to guide farmers on planting and harvesting decisions.
Prof. Anosike added that NiMet is working closely with private sector stakeholders to develop sustainable Digital Climate Advisory Services (DCAS) for smallholder farmers, aimed at improving yields, protecting livelihoods, and strengthening climate resilience.
In her remarks, Mrs. Dede Ekoue commended NiMet’s leadership and its role in providing reliable climate data to safeguard livelihoods.
“NiMet has been at the forefront of strengthening national resilience by bridging the gap between science, policy, and practice. Going forward, deeper collaborations with private sector actors will be crucial to ensure climate information becomes accessible, affordable, and actionable for millions of smallholder farmers,” she said.
The workshop brought together policymakers, development partners, and private sector practitioners to chart a roadmap for climate-smart agribusiness partnerships in Nigeria
