As part of efforts to enhance Nigeria’s climate resilience and early warning systems, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has concluded a strategic Maproom Training Workshop, bringing together key experts from various sectors in preparation for the national launch of the Enhancing National Climate Services (ENACTS) initiative.
The week-long workshop, held at NiMet Headquarters in Abuja from July 28 to August 1, 2025, focused on equipping stakeholders from agriculture, health, and academic sectors with hands-on knowledge of the NiMet Maproom platform. The platform is a cutting-edge, interactive tool that facilitates access to localized climate data and strengthens decision-making in climate-sensitive areas such as public health planning, disaster preparedness, and sustainable agriculture.
Speaking at the workshop’s closing ceremony, NiMet’s Director-General and CEO, Professor Charles Anosike, highlighted the training as a critical step in embedding climate intelligence across national and sectoral development frameworks.
“This workshop has created a network of empowered individuals equipped with the skills and tools to use climate information for smart, timely decisions,” Anosike said. “We are not just providing early warnings; we are building a system where early action follows immediately.”
Professor Anosike further reiterated NiMet’s commitment to delivering accurate, timely, and actionable climate services in alignment with national development priorities. He praised the collaborative role of project partners—Sahel Consulting, the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI), and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation—for supporting the ENACTS implementation in Nigeria.
The training marks a major milestone ahead of the ENACTS Nigeria Launch, scheduled for August 19–20, 2025, in Abuja. The launch event will feature high-level policy discussions and technical sessions to showcase key achievements and outline next steps for delivering user-driven climate services across the country.
The ENACTS initiative is poised to revolutionize the accessibility and usability of climate data in Nigeria, driving informed planning, improving disaster risk reduction, and supporting climate-smart development across all sectors.
