The League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOWV) has extended a heartfelt welcome to distinguished Senators, delegates, and advocates participating in the ongoing Constitutional Review Public Hearing, which commenced on July 4 and continues through July 5, 2025. The hearings are being held simultaneously across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones in Borno, Kano, Plateau, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, and Lagos marking a historic milestone in the country’s democratic development.
This was contained in a statement signed, by Irene Awunah-Ikyegh NILOWV President
Speaking on behalf of the Founder and BOT Chairperson, Dame Dr. Esther Uduehi, the National Executive Council, and the entire membership of NILOWV, the organization’s National President, Irene Awunah-Ikyegh, welcomed participants and reaffirmed the League’s strong commitment to an inclusive, representative, and equitable constitutional process.
At the forefront of NILOWV’s advocacy is the Special Seats Reserved for Women Bill a proposed constitutional amendment designed to increase women’s representation in Nigeria’s National Assembly through legally guaranteed quotas.
“This moment is critical,” Mrs. Awunah-Ikyegh said. “It is time to speak truth to power, armed with compelling data and global best practices showing the transformative power of women’s leadership. Countries that have adopted quota systems have recorded measurable progress in governance, stability, and development. Nigeria must not be left behind.”
Addressing the Senators in attendance, she called for a renewed sense of duty and political courage.
“Today is a test of leadership and accountability. We urge our Senators to support legislation that reflects the democratic ideals upon which Nigeria was built equality, fairness, and inclusion. Supporting this bill is not just about representation; it is about bringing diverse perspectives and sustainable solutions to the decision-making table,” she stated.
To the members of NILOWV, Awunah-Ikyegh issued a rallying call to remain resilient and optimistic.
“We have worked long and hard for this moment. Now is the time to rise, united and determined, to advocate for the rights of women and girls across Nigeria. Together, we are a force for change and together, we can shape the future.”
The NILOWV President also commended the Constitutional Review Committee for their unwavering commitment to democratic reforms.
“Your diligence and dedication to this vital national assignment will not be forgotten. Your names will be etched in the annals of history for championing a more just and inclusive Nigeria.”
She emphasized that the public hearing transcends a single legislative proposal it is a defining moment for Nigeria’s future.
“This is not just about a bill. It’s about building a nation where everyone regardless of gender has the opportunity to lead, contribute, and thrive. A Nigeria where equity is not aspirational, but foundational.”
As the constitutional review progresses, NILOWV calls on all stakeholders to be guided by the principles of justice, equality, and democratic accountability, drawing strength from the examples of countries that have successfully transformed their political spaces through deliberate gender inclusion.
Long live the League of Women Voters of Nigeria!
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
Together, we can and we will achieve the change we seek.
