The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sympathy and condolences to the governments and people of South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe following devastating floods that have claimed more than 100 lives and displaced thousands across parts of Southern Africa.
The statement was signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja dated Sunday, January 18, 2026.
In the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria commiserated with the affected countries over the immense human and material losses caused by weeks of torrential rainfall, which led to overflowing rivers, destruction of roads and bridges, large-scale displacement, and disruption of agricultural activities and essential services.
The Federal Government also expressed concern over the secondary humanitarian consequences of the floods, including food insecurity, potential disease outbreaks, and increased vulnerability of women, children, and other at-risk populations.
Nigeria conveyed its solidarity with the ongoing rescue, evacuation, and relief operations being carried out by national authorities, regional bodies, and international humanitarian partners. It further acknowledged the resilience and determination of the affected countries as they respond to the disaster and commence recovery and rebuilding efforts.

The statement underscored the growing threat of climate-induced extreme weather events across Africa and reiterated the need for stronger regional cooperation, effective early-warning systems, climate adaptation measures, and sustained international support to reduce the humanitarian and developmental impacts of such disasters.
The Federal Government assured the affected countries of Nigeria’s continued goodwill and support, reaffirming its commitment to bilateral, regional, and multilateral cooperation in disaster preparedness, humanitarian response, and climate resilience.
“The thoughts and prayers of the Government and people of Nigeria are with the Governments and peoples of South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and all other affected countries during this difficult period,” the statement concluded.
