The Federal Republic of Nigeria has formally endorsed China’s newly launched Global Governance Initiative (GGI), describing it as a timely and forward-looking effort to strengthen the international system.
The endorsement was conveyed in a statement signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Abuja, on Thursday 11th September, 2025, following the launch of the GGI at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus meeting in Tianjin, China, on September 1, 2025.
Unveiled ahead of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, the initiative builds on earlier frameworks the Global Development Initiative (GDI), Global Security Initiative (GSI), and Global Civilization Initiative (GCI). It seeks to address critical global challenges such as climate change, digital inequality, artificial intelligence governance, and respect for international law.
Nigeria commended the initiative’s focus on five foundational principles: sovereign equality, rule of law, multilateralism, people-centered governance, and results-oriented action.

As Africa’s largest economy and a key voice in multilateral diplomacy, Nigeria sees the GGI as a platform to advance reforms within the United Nations, expand representation in emerging domains like cyberspace and outer space, and promote inclusive development.
The statement further noted that the GGI aligns with Nigeria’s national priorities, its principle of strategic autonomy, and the African Union’s Agenda 2063, stressing the importance of South–South cooperation to achieve a fairer and more sustainable world order.
By supporting the GGI, Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to a more just, inclusive, and effective international order one rooted in shared responsibility and mutual respect.
