Nigerian youth and delegate, Odeyemi Qudus, recently participated in a two-week seminar on “International Communication Capacity on Belt and Road Initiatives” held in China. The experience, sponsored by Hon. Babajimi Benson, marked his first trip outside Africa and offered deep insights into China’s development, culture, and global partnerships.
In this exclusive reflection, Qudus shares the highlights of his journey from infrastructure and technology to agriculture and hospitality.

A Journey of Firsts
“My trip to China began with a 5-hour flight from Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, followed by an 11-12 hour flight to Beijing,” Qudus recalled. “This was my first time traveling outside my jurisdiction to another continent using both air and rail transport.”
China, he noted, operates in a time zone seven hours ahead of Nigeria. With over 1.4 billion people, China ranks as the world’s second most populated nation, yet its ability to ensure food security and employment for its citizens left a lasting impression.

Key Takeaways from the China Experience
- Modern Road and Rail Infrastructure
“China’s road network is remarkably well-planned, connecting both urban and rural regions. The rail system is equally impressive,” he said. “I traveled over 1,200 kilometers from Beijing to Xi’an in just five hours by train a distance that would take days in some countries.” - Reliable Electricity Supply
“China enjoys 24-hour electricity, which powers its businesses and industries. This reliable supply has boosted productivity and contributed to national development.” - A Rich, Proud Culture
“China’s cultural heritage is proudly preserved. I visited the Xi’an Film Studio, founded in 1958, and historical landmarks like the Xi’an Bell Tower and Drum Tower, which once served as timekeeping hubs. The cultural depth was both inspiring and humbling.” - Cutting-Edge Technology
“China’s use of artificial intelligence (AI), 5G networks, and green screen technology in media production was mind-blowing. I witnessed robots presenting news during the 2nd Television Festival of Shanghai Cooperation Organization Countries, where nations like Russia and Pakistan shared how they use tech to counter fake news.” - Warm Hospitality and Safety
“Our hosts were incredibly hospitable. The program organizers ensured we were safe, well-fed, and comfortable throughout our stay. The respect and care shown to international participants were commendable.” - Effective Communication Tools
“Despite the language barrier, communication was seamless. We used WeChat, Google Translate, and real-time interpreters during conferences. Payments were made using the Alipay app a testament to China’s digital ecosystem.” - Organized Agriculture and Rural Development
“China’s agricultural system is structured and well-supported by the government. There are designated farm settlements and industrial zones to improve efficiency. Visiting the Great Wall a symbol of historical resilience was a highlight.”

Final Thoughts
“My experience in China was enriching and transformational. It opened my eyes to how a large, diverse country can organize itself efficiently while preserving its identity. I’m grateful to Hon. Babajimi Benson for this life-changing opportunity. I have returned home with new ideas, new friendships, and a deeper understanding of international cooperation and development.”
