Abuja | June 28, 2025. In a landmark international collaboration, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has partnered with the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs, through Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) India’s premier National Security and Police University to train 1,000 FRSC officers in stress management and emotional wellbeing.
This strategic partnership marks a significant step in FRSC’s ongoing efforts to build a mentally resilient, emotionally intelligent, and professionally empowered workforce. The first phase of the training is scheduled to begin in August 2025, targeting officers across various commands.
According to the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, the programme is part of Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed’s vision to enhance both the operational performance and mental wellness of FRSC personnel.
“Our officers work under high-pressure conditions daily to protect lives on Nigerian roads. This initiative will help them better manage stress, regulate emotions, and make sound decisions in crisis situations,” the Corps Marshal said.
“By focusing on mental health, we are not only safeguarding the wellbeing of our personnel but also strengthening our service to the nation.”
The comprehensive training will be delivered by a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals, including clinical psychologists, research officers, and senior administrators from Rashtriya Raksha University. It will combine modern science-backed approaches to stress reduction with time-tested wellness practices and will include both physical and virtual learning sessions.
Key objectives of the training include:
Raising awareness of occupational and personal stress triggers
Teaching practical stress and emotion management tools
Building psychological resilience and peer support networks
Promoting a culture of mental health within the Corps
Strengthening decision-making in high-stakes operational environments
The programme will take place in four strategic locations, including:
FRSC Academy, Udi, Enugu State
FRSC Marshal Inspectorate Training School, Owo-Alero
Additional centres to ensure nationwide reach through hybrid (in-person and virtual) sessions
This initiative builds upon the March 2025 foundation of the Nigeria-India institutional partnership, which saw a delegation of FRSC officers trained in Gujarat, India. As part of the deepening relationship, 10 FRSC personnel are currently finalizing arrangements to pursue Master’s degrees in areas such as information technology, cybersecurity, data management, and traffic enforcement at Rashtriya Raksha University.
The training reflects a shared commitment by Nigeria and India to institutional development, capacity building, and public service reform anchored in the health and wellbeing of personnel.
“This collaboration speaks to our shared goal of building resilient, people-focused institutions that serve not only with efficiency but also with empathy,” Ogungbemide concluded.
The programme is expected to yield measurable improvements in officers’ self-awareness, emotional regulation, team cohesion, and operational capacity, ultimately contributing to safer roads and stronger communities across Nigeria.
