Nigeria’s legal community is mourning the loss of a judicial icon, former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, who passed away at the age of 89.
Justice Uwais died on Friday in Abuja, coinciding with the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, marking the end of a life dedicated to justice, service, and nation-building.

He served as CJN from 1995 until his retirement in 2006, holding the office for 11 years and leaving a lasting legacy in Nigeria’s judiciary. Widely respected for his integrity and judicial wisdom, Uwais played a pivotal role in shaping the modern legal system and was instrumental in several judicial reforms.
Tributes have begun pouring in from across the legal profession, with lawyers describing him as a “towering figure” and a “guardian of justice.”
