The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that Nigerian embassies and consular missions abroad are currently experiencing financial difficulties, including delays in salary payments, rent obligations, and other operational expenses.
In a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the Ministry acknowledged the “financial and operational constraints” confronting several missions, attributing them to prolonged budgetary shortfalls and the broader economic situation in the country.
“The Nigerian Diplomatic Missions are not immune to the economic challenges at home,” the Ministry said. “Budgetary limitations over the years have significantly impacted the optimal functioning of our Missions abroad and their ability to deliver on core mandates.”
Despite these difficulties, the Federal Government assured that it is already taking “decisive andconcrete steps” to stabilize the situation. Among the measures highlighted were:
- The release of special intervention funds to cushion the hardship faced by missions.
- The clearance of more than 80 per cent of verified debts, prioritizing salaries of locally recruited staff, service providers, and arrears owed to officers.
- The approval of the first tranche of refunds to cover shortfalls in the 2024 fiscal year caused by foreign exchange differentials.
- Approval of Second Semester Allocations, with the Ministry engaging the Ministry of Finance and Central Bank of Nigeria to fast-track the release of personnel and overhead costs.
According to the Ministry, several missions have already received funds and begun stabilizing their operations.
Looking ahead, the government said it is working on a sustainable financial model to ensure the long-term stability of Nigeria’s foreign service. This includes exploring innovative funding solutions and embedding efficiency measures as part of wider fiscal reforms.
The Ministry also expressed appreciation to Nigerian diplomats who have continued to serve under “difficult circumstances,” as well as to host governments and service providers for their understanding.
“We are confident that the current challenges are temporary and will be overcome through the concerted efforts of this administration,” the statement said, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to robust international diplomacy and the welfare of its citizens abroad.
