In a major move aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s education sector, the Federal Government has released ₦50 billion to address longstanding allowances owed to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). This financial intervention is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, designed to foster stability and excellence in tertiary education.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, made the announcement in Abuja, commending President Tinubu for his decisive action and unwavering commitment to resolving key challenges within the university system.
“This release marks a significant milestone in our efforts to ensure a stable, strike-free academic environment,” Dr. Alausa said. “It reflects the President’s genuine concern for the education sector and his readiness to act.”
Dr. Alausa noted that the ₦50 billion allocation will help settle overdue entitlements, restore morale among academic staff, and pave the way for enhanced productivity across federal institutions. He also expressed appreciation to both academic and non-academic staff for their patience and dedication throughout years of industrial unrest.
He further assured that the government remains committed to preventing future disruptions in the sector. “This is just the beginning,” the Minister added. “Similar efforts will be extended to other sectors under the Federal Government to ensure fairness and inclusive progress.”
President Tinubu, reaffirming his administration’s focus on youth empowerment, emphasized that education remains a top priority. “Our youth are the heartbeat of this nation. We are determined to provide them with quality education and the skills they need to succeed,” the President said.
The Ministry of Education has pledged to work closely with all stakeholders to ensure the transparent and impactful utilization of the funds, in line with the administration’s vision for a stronger and more effective education system.
