Abuja – June 12, 2025: The Federal Ministry of Education has firmly denied claims that it approved a controversial history textbook alleged to misrepresent Yoruba history, stating that the book in question is not among its approved instructional materials.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, the Ministry responded to a petition titled “Petition to Defend Yoruba History from Ethnic Distortion in Nigerian Textbooks.” The petition was submitted by the Concerned Citizens of Yoruba Origin and Supporters of Truth, led by its National Chairman, Otunba Abayomi Odunowo.
According to the Ministry, the petition raised alarm over alleged historical inaccuracies in a textbook authored by Tony and Ijeoma Duru and published by Tones Publishers. The book is said to contain misleading claims about the founding of Ile-Ife claims the petitioners argue could distort cultural understanding and potentially threaten national unity.
“The Ministry wishes to clarify that the said textbook was neither authored, commissioned, nor approved by the Federal Ministry of Education,” the statement read. “It is not part of the instructional materials endorsed for use in public basic education institutions across Nigeria, and the Ministry has no affiliation with the publication.”
The Ministry emphasized its commitment to upholding educational integrity and national unity. “Instructional materials officially approved by the Ministry undergo rigorous vetting to ensure alignment with national education standards, promote literacy, and foster inclusive and culturally respectful learning environments,” it added.
Acknowledging the seriousness of the concerns raised, the Ministry assured stakeholders that it would collaborate with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and other relevant agencies to thoroughly investigate the matter.
“Given the sensitivity of the issue and its broader implications for education, cultural identity, and national cohesion, all necessary steps will be taken to ensure an accurate, respectful, and timely resolution,” the statement concluded.
The Federal Ministry of Education reiterated its dedication to providing quality, inclusive education that supports unity, peace, and national development.
