Abuja, Nigeria – The Africa Climate Change and Infrastructure Summit, held from August 11 to 12, 2025, brought together top diplomats, policymakers, and industry leaders who pledged deeper cooperation to advance clean energy, gender inclusion, and sustainable development, stressing the urgency of united climate action across Africa.
The high-level meeting attracted delegates from across the continent and beyond, including Ambassadors from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Cuba, Russia, and Zambia, alongside senior Nigerian officials and private sector stakeholders.
Women at the Heart of Resilience
Opening the summit, the convener underscored the central role of women in building resilient societies, describing them as “pillars of progress” and calling for greater recognition of their contributions to climate solutions and community development.
Diplomatic Perspectives on Climate Solutions
Zambia’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Paul Lombi, shared how climate change has disrupted his country’s energy supply, recalling crippling power shortages in 2023. He highlighted the Gawu (apple green) tree sourced from Nigeria and Niger as an organic fertiliser supporting climate-friendly agriculture.
Pascaline Yakubu, the DRC’s Ambassador to Nigeria, drew attention to her country’s vast ecological assets, including nearly half of Africa’s tropical rainforests and significant hydropower potential. She cited the ongoing rehabilitation of the Inga Dam, which could generate up to 40,000 megawatts for sub-Saharan Africa, though progress has been hindered by conflict in eastern Congo.
Cuba’s Ambassador, Miriam Palmero, presented her nation’s “Life Task” state plan for coastal protection and renewable energy, offering technology-sharing partnerships with African nations. She praised Africa’s strides in clean energy and called for a “fairer and more prosperous future” through joint efforts.
Russia’s Ambassador, Andrey L. Podelyshe, was recognised for his country’s growing collaborations with Africa in energy and mining, including initiatives under the Russia–Africa Forum.
Nigeria’s Climate Commitment
Chris Nkwonta, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Climate Change, reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to meeting its international climate obligations through the National Climate Change Commission and the Climate Change Act.
“We will continue to dialogue, collaborate, and seek technical assistance to ensure climate change conversations grow stronger,” Nkwonta said, pledging close collaboration with summit organisers to build a strong international coalition for climate action.
Gas Expansion and Energy Transition
Farouk Ahmed, Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), outlined major gas infrastructure projects, including the Gulf of Guinea gas pipeline and the Nigeria LNG Train 7 expansion, expected to add 7.6 million metric tons of annual capacity.
Ahmed restated Nigeria’s pledge to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2030 and up to 45% with international support—positioning natural gas as a key transition fuel. He also cited the Nigeria–Morocco pipeline project as vital for energy security and regional growth.
A Call to Action
Summit convener Hon. Moses M. Owaru described Africa as being at a “defining moment,” where climate threats, infrastructure deficits, and economic uncertainty present both urgent challenges and unprecedented opportunities for innovation.
“We must use this summit as a springboard for actionable strategies, cross-border partnerships, and bold ideas,” he urged.
Delegates closed the summit with a shared commitment: Africa’s climate, energy, and development challenges demand collective solutions, inclusive leadership, and sustained global partnerships.
