The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reaffirmed its dedication to upholding human rights and strengthening civil-military relations by organizing a Sensitization Workshop for newly appointed Civil-Military Relations (CMR), Human Rights, and Gender Desk Officers.
According to a statement by Group Captain Kabiru Ali, Deputy Director of Public Relations and Information at NAF Headquarters, the workshop is part of the force’s broader initiative to equip personnel with the necessary knowledge to prevent human rights violations, minimize civilian harm, and enhance inter-agency cooperation.
In his opening remarks, Air Vice Marshal Ibikunle Daramola, Chief of Civil-Military Relations, underscored the significance of human rights awareness and ethical military conduct, stressing that these are essential for fostering trust between the military and civilians.
The workshop drew participants from various NAF commands, units, and operational theatres, focusing on key topics such as human rights protection, civilian harm mitigation, media engagement, reputation management, and inter-agency collaboration.

Renowned experts, including Professor Ehiz Odigie, Dr. Sampson Terwase, and Mr. Peter Mancha, led discussions, providing valuable insights on best practices for non-kinetic military operations. Participants gained a deeper understanding of their roles as Desk Officers, with an emphasis on ethical conduct and effective engagement with civilian populations.
As part of its continuous commitment, the NAF has outlined a series of follow-up initiatives, including sensitization visits to all operational theatres and Command Headquarters throughout the year. These efforts will reinforce human rights awareness and further mitigate risks of civilian harm in military operations.
Furthermore, the NAF remains committed to community engagement through Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) and outreach programs designed to strengthen public trust. By prioritizing ethical military practices and fostering stronger civilian relations, the NAF aims to set a high standard for professionalism and accountability, ensuring its operations contribute to both national security and the well-being of the Nigerian people.
