Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has called for the unconditional release of fellow lawyer Abdul Mahmud, following reports of his remand at Keffi prison pursuant to a court order.
Adeyanju disclosed that although he has a pending civil suit against Mahmud currently before the court, the protection of personal liberty must remain paramount.
According to him, the enforcement of court processes must strictly adhere to due process, particularly where legal practitioners are concerned.
He stated that lawyers should not be subjected to punitive consequences for carrying out their professional responsibilities, except in circumstances clearly established by law.
Adeyanju therefore urged authorities to ensure Mahmud’s immediate and unconditional release, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding fundamental rights while legal proceedings continue.
As of the time of filing this report, details surrounding the specific grounds for the remand remain subject to ongoing legal processes.
