The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Correspondents Chapel, is set to host its 2025 End-of-Year Gathering on Friday, December 5, 2025, with a focused conversation on strengthening journalists’ welfare through collective bargaining and union solidarity.

The event, scheduled for 2:00 PM at the NUJ FCT Secretariat, Utako, Abuja, will bring together correspondents, senior union leaders, media professionals, and stakeholders to reflect on the year’s challenges and opportunities within the journalism landscape.

Centered on the theme “Opportunities for Collective Bargaining and Unionization: The Place of Welfare,” the programme aims to re-energize conversations around improving working conditions, fair remuneration, safety, and professional support for reporters and media workers in the FCT and beyond.

According to the Chapel, the choice of theme underscores the growing need for a more united, empowered, and welfare-driven media community particularly at a time when journalists across Nigeria continue to face economic pressure, security risks, shrinking newsroom resources, and an evolving media ecosystem.

The Chief Host, Comrade Grace Ike, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, described the event as “an opportunity to assess how far the union has come in defending the rights of journalists while also charting a renewed direction for 2026.”

She emphasized that collective bargaining remains central to strengthening the profession, adding that welfare must be seen as a non-negotiable pillar for sustaining ethical and independent journalism.

Similarly, the Host, Comrade Felix Ojo, Chairman of the FCT Correspondents Chapel, noted that the gathering is designed not just as an end-of-year celebration but as a strategic forum to reinforce solidarity among correspondents who cover some of the nation’s most demanding beats.

Ojo added that the Chapel is committed to prioritizing the interests of its members, ensuring that issues of welfare, newsroom support, and professional development remain at the forefront of its agenda.

The event will feature goodwill messages, reflections on the year’s activities, interactive sessions, and engagements aimed at strengthening unity within the union.

Members of the public, media stakeholders, and invited guests are encouraged to join the conversation on better securing the future of journalism in Nigeria.
