In a bold move to enhance transparency and accountability across Nigeria’s higher education sector, the Federal Government has directed all federal tertiary institutions to develop and maintain functional websites showcasing key institutional and financial data.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, announced the directive, emphasizing that each institution must publish its Annual Budgetary Allocation with a detailed breakdown across personnel, overhead, and capital expenditures.
Institutions are also required to disclose the total Research Grant Revenue earned in the previous year—categorized into domestic (e.g., government agencies, local industries) and international (e.g., multilateral organizations, foreign partners) sources.
Furthermore, schools must display their current year’s TETFund Allocation, showing the amount received to support academic and infrastructural development.
The directive includes quarterly updates on each institution’s Endowment Fund as recorded at the end of the last year, as well as the current Total Student Population, clearly divided into undergraduate and postgraduate numbers.
The Ministry stressed the need for this information to be presented in a clear and user-friendly manner, enabling public access and understanding—particularly for parents, students, and stakeholders.
All institutions are expected to comply by May 31, 2025. The Ministry of Education will conduct periodic audits and may take administrative action against non-compliant institutions.
This policy forms part of a broader education reform initiative aimed at restoring public trust, enhancing performance-based funding, and boosting Nigeria’s international education standing.
Dr. Alausa urged heads of institutions to prioritize the directive, describing it as a crucial step towards greater institutional integrity and competitiveness on the global stage.
