ABUJA — The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated the Government and people of India on the country’s 80th Independence Anniversary, celebrated on August 15, 2026.
The congratulatory message was contained in a statement signed by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

Nigeria described India as a valued friend and strategic partner, highlighting the longstanding relationship between both countries and their expanding cooperation across several sectors.

According to the Federal Government, the relationship is rooted in shared membership of the Commonwealth and the Non-Aligned Movement and has continued to grow in areas including trade, investment, technology, health, education, defence and cultural exchange.

Nigeria also commended India’s journey of nation-building, economic transformation and democratic development since gaining independence in 1947.

The government noted India’s emergence as one of the world’s leading economies and an influential voice in global affairs, while acknowledging the country’s continued investments in Nigeria.

It further recognised the contributions of the Indian community in Nigeria to the country’s economic development.

Nigeria Seeks Deeper Cooperation With India
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation with India, particularly in trade and investment, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, information technology, defence and South-South cooperation.

Nigeria also expressed readiness to collaborate more closely with India through multilateral platforms, including the United Nations, Commonwealth and G20.

The government said such cooperation would focus on advancing shared interests, including global governance reform and sustainable development.

Nigeria extended its wishes for India’s continued peace, progress and prosperity, while reaffirming its commitment to deepening the warm and mutually beneficial relationship between the two countries.

The message comes as India marks another milestone in its independence journey, with Nigeria emphasising the importance of continued partnership between the two countries in addressing shared development and global challenges.
