A high-level delegation from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), led by Director General Mr. Gerd Müller, met with the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, on April 2, 2025, at the ECOWAS Headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.
The meeting marked a pivotal step in strengthening the partnership between UNIDO and ECOWAS, with discussions centered on advancing trade, industrialization, and sustainable economic growth across the region.
A key focus of the talks was the Africa Trade Competitiveness and Market Access Program (ATCMA) – Regional Component (WACOMP II), a collaborative initiative designed to enhance trade within Africa and with the European Union. Both leaders underscored the urgency of addressing challenges related to market access, trade barriers, value addition, and quality compliance. They also explored strategies to enhance industry standards and promote economic diversification through value-added production.
Another major topic of discussion was the empowerment of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) across West Africa. Recognizing the crucial role of SMEs in driving economic growth, the leaders deliberated on ways to strengthen business practices, expand export opportunities, and enhance the region’s competitiveness in global markets.
The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of UNIDO and ECOWAS to accelerating industrialization and economic cooperation. By fostering a more integrated and efficient trade environment, both organizations aim to create a sustainable and competitive African market.
