Troops of the 22 Armoured Brigade, operating from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Babana, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, have repelled an attempted infiltration by armed bandits, killing two and recovering arms and ammunition.
The attack occurred at about 2:50 a.m. on Thursday, 28 August 2025, when the criminals attempted to enter the Babana axis. Soldiers engaged the bandits in a fierce exchange of fire, forcing them to retreat in disarray.
During a follow-up operation along their escape route, troops neutralised two bandits on the outskirts of Babana. Items recovered include one AK-47 rifle, four magazines loaded with 60 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 323 rounds of 7.62x54mm ammunition, and a mobile phone.
An officer and a soldier sustained leg injuries during the encounter and are currently receiving medical treatment. According to military sources, both are responding well. The remains of the neutralised bandits have been handed over to the appropriate authorities.
Commending the troops for their bravery, the Commander of 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, praised their vigilance and resilience. He reaffirmed the brigade’s resolve to sustain pressure on criminal groups and ensure the safety of residents.
“The Brigade will continue to intensify operations and employ all legitimate means to eradicate criminal elements while safeguarding lives and property,” Brigadier General Barkins stated.
The Nigerian Army further assured residents of Niger State and neighbouring areas that it remains committed to protecting communities and maintaining security.
