In a bold step towards enhancing cross-border regulatory collaboration in the telecommunications sector, Nigeria’s National Communications Commission (NCC) recently concluded a strategic two-day benchmarking visit to Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA). The visit, which focused on deepening regulatory synergy, provided a platform for both bodies to exchange best practices, share operational insights, and explore innovative strategies for telecom industry growth and stability.
During the high-level engagement, the two regulators delved into critical areas of telecom regulation, including Quality of Service (QoS) monitoring, consumer rights advocacy, telecom infrastructure protection, and cybersecurity frameworks. The NCC delegation, led by top officials, was given an exclusive tour of the NCA’s state-of-the-art Communications Monitoring Centre (CMC). The facility boasts a cutting-edge Network Monitoring System capable of near real-time surveillance of network performance across Ghana.
Additionally, the Nigerian delegation explored NCA’s Common Platform—a robust system designed to oversee the financial integrity and regulatory compliance of licensed telecom operators within Ghana. This visit served as a springboard for discussions on enhancing data protection policies and bolstering cross-border cooperation in combating cyber threats.
Both the NCC and the NCA presented comprehensive outlines of their achievements and landmark reforms over the past decade. Nigeria’s NCC spotlighted major initiatives, including the successful implementation of the NIN-SIM linkage policy, the deployment of its Incident Reporting Platform for streamlined issue management, and the establishment of key strategic frameworks aimed at improving Quality of Service (QoS), Consumer Satisfaction, and Compliance Indices. Other highlights included the introduction of the Tariff Simplification regime and the operationalization of a Presidential Order that designates telecom infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) in Nigeria.
The visit marks a significant milestone in regional telecom collaboration, reinforcing the commitment of both regulatory bodies to elevate industry standards, safeguard consumer interests, and enhance service delivery through shared expertise and regulatory innovation.
